NDBC has recently revised the NDBC Handbook of Automated Data Quality Control Checks and Procedures. The new document can be found on our Publications page.
Are there pre-done summaries of the data providing station climatology?
Yes, these are the climatic summary tables and graphics available from the historical data pages. The graphics provide an insight into the monthly distribution of each measurement at each station. They show the monthly means, standard deviations, and extremes. The tables, which can be downloaded in .PDF format and viewed with Acrobat Reader, provide more detailed frequency distributions and several other table types. All measurements are summarized except spectral wave data and subsurface measurements.
In particular, the tables provide:
Monthly frequency distributions of wind speed, wind gust, sea level pressure, air temperature, sea surface temperature, air-sea surface temperature difference, dew point (where available), visibility (where available), significant wave height, average wave period, and dominant wave period.
Monthly, seasonal, and annual tabulations of wind speed versus wind direction.
Monthly, seasonal, and annual significant wave height versus wind speed.
Monthly, seasonal, and annual significant wave height versus dominant wave period.
Monthly, seasonal, and annual significant wave height versus average wave period.
Individual monthly means and extremes for all measurements.
Look under each station’s historical and climatic summary data page for links to enable you to view the graphics or the summary tables. You can also view a list of all of the stations summarized.
